there was a seasonal flower display
between the textiles &rows of household cleaner
where bright &violent red poinsettias poured out into
out into the center aisle
i brought one home nearly dead, but it grew back
for almost one week it lived beside me
&when i spoke it seemed to speak back
easter candy never reminded us much of christ
yesterday bleeds out until today slumps out of last night
but it's so nice it's nice up here at the front of the store
with your brown eyes held up in the incandescent light
your red hair filled up more space
than every busted packet of fake blood
now caked between the tile
red red discarded ink cartridges all damaged out
repackaged for a landfill
&something about a halloween mask
the elastic band worn out &snapped
you pulled it over &laughed
now when i smile it seems to smile back
celebrate thanksgiving on paper plates
turkeys painted at the bottom
count our blessings by the wine glass
call or relatives by the bottle
in the parking lot you smashed on a cheap caffeine drink
we'll be back here again at four am tomorrow
goodbye christmas, hello bold new year
valentines melting on the sidewalks now
springtimes finally here
&then comes mass death independence day parades
i love the statehouse on independence day
everything moving here
the shelves alive with childhood memories
put happy discounts out on sweatshop tragedies
black bean burgers in the break room
smart sense styrofoam plates
we steal pounds of paper waste
the RTA runs straight to kmart, come on down and buy a belt
new walking shoes, shopping off the short-date bottom shelf
we've got our discounts out!
&troves of dirt on our employer
there was a seasonal flower display
between the textiles and rows of household cleaner
where bright &violent red poinsettias found their way out
outside of the center aisle
the light is gone their scent has passed
it was a fragile circumstance
without true cause out of its pot
i know it will not grow back
